5 Minute Money Saving Meals

So this week I’ve made it my challenge to make a few homemade meals for Oscar, I’ve stored some away in the freezer for a later date and kept one or two out for the next couple of days. I’m trying to see how I get on with making these 5 minute meals of an evening when Oscar is asleep in bed. So far so good, I’ve managed to make one meal a night.

I’ve been using mainly frozen vegetables as they last a lot longer and are a lot cheaper then buying fresh vegetables every day. I still do use pre made jars on the odd occasion as the meals I’ve been making contain no meat and the pre made jars contain either meat or fish so at least I know he’s getting the right balance.

We usually pay £5-£6 for 10 jars of pre made food which is a lot in my mind, I’m hoping by making my own meals the pre made jars will last a little longer and I won’t need them much. Plus by making your own meals you know exactly what is going into your baby’s food, no unwanted extra’s. Here are a few ideas of baby meals that I’ve been making and storing at home, Oscar is 7 months old so I tend to make his food with some texture and bits.

Ingredients

For this meal I tend to use about 4 pieces of frozen mash, a few trees of broccoli, cauliflower and about 6-7 pieces of carrot and suede.

With all all of my meals I have used Nuby’s Mash and Feed system, first of all I washand peel the skin off the courgette and cut up into chunks. Put a little water in the bottom of the jug and add the steam tray, put the courgette in and pop the lid on. Put the jug into the microwave for a few minutes until the courgette becomes soft. Empty the water and put the courgettes aside, put the frozen veg into the jug without water or the steam tray and put in the microwave for a few minutes, once the vegetables are soft add the courgette and start mashing the veg. Once all the veg is mashed to the consistency you want add a little of the sauce to add a bit of moisture.

I then use sterilised pots to section the meal and store in the freezer.

Ingredients

Same for this meal I only use a few pieces of frozen mash, carrot & suede and more of the frozen vegetable pieces.

First of all I make the pasta as pasta does take a while to cook, make sure it’s floopy and soft and cooked in the middle before serving. I cut the pasta up into little pieces to make it easier to chew for Oscar. I then follow the same method with the frozen veg, pop in the microwave until cooked and mash together. Add the cooked pasta pieces and sauce and mash a little bit more. The separate and store.

Before cooking the spagetti I snapped it up into tiny little pieces to make cooking easier. Boil the pasta and rinse with cold water. Then follow the same method with the frozen vegetables and add the spagetti once cooked, make sure the spagetti is floppy and cooked inside. Add the ingredients together and mash them up, then add the sauce and separate into pots for storage.

So far Oscar has enjoyed and eaten all of the meals I’ve prepeared for him, I heat them up in the microwave and let them cool down a little before serving them to Oscar. I’m really looking forward to carrying on with prepearing meals for Oscar and finding new ingredients to create delicious meals.

These meals literally take 5 minutes to make, other than the pasta and spagetti. They are simple, quick, easy and are full of those important veggies for your little ones.
