Looking at transforming your living room without breaking the bank, we’re currently updating our house room by room. We’re starting with our living room, at the moment it’s quite dark as we have a grey feature wall with a brown fireplace and black fire. As we live in a terraced house the rooms aren’t that big at all, so making them lighter may give the illusion of looking a little more spacious. We’ve started with a few new products to try and spruce the place up without breaking the bank. Our house is a really old terraced house and still had wooden window frames so in the next couple of years we will be renovating the windows and doors in the house. But for now we plan on just updating our room decor.
Fireplace & Chimney Breast
We haven’t yet started on transforming the fireplace but we plan to sand down the wooden surround and stick a new coat of paint on, a light grey. The chimney breast wall I plan on painting white, I plan to just buy a tub of Dulux Matt White Paint and using it throughout the house to just re coat the walls. As the fire is so old I don’t want to change it if I can help it. We bought some lights the start of the year in the Christmas sale and put them inside the fire as we don’t use it. It already brightens the fire place up so once the surround and wall have been pained it will brighten the room up a little more. It looks so beautiful and cosy at night and makes the room feel a little warmer which is perfect for the coming winter nights.
Who would have thought that brand new skirting can bring the whole room together, not only this but I didn’t realise the value for money. Whenever I’ve re decorated I’ve never thought about new skirting but now there’s such a fantastic range. We have looked at Skirting World’s range for our new skirting, their prices are so reasonable. We decided to go for MDF as it is moisture resistant, it’s a better cut of wood and the finish just looks impeccable.
As we haven’t changed much in our house since we moved in September 2016 we’ve kept to the same colour scheme in every room, now we plan on changing it all in each room. The living room we currently have a duck egg and brown theme. We plan on as mentioned. before brightening the colours a little so we’ll be going for a light grey/stone and a mustard colour scheme with copper accessories. We already have a few accessories in grey, we have photo frames, a rug and the feature tiles so hopefully we won’t need to change a lot
Paint & Gloss
As mentioned previously we plan on just buying a tub of white paint and just re coating the walls for that new/brighter effect. Re glossing things also gives off the ‘new look’ effect, we had central heating put in 2 years ago and the pipes are still copper. I’d like to buy some accessories that are copper to fit in with the colour scheme. A quick coat of white paint on a wall can really brighten the place up.
We wanted something different in our living room, something just to add that bit of edge. We purchased some brick slips about a year ago and added them to either side of the chimney breast wall. They were much easier to apply to the wall then first anticipated, we’ve had so many compliments from visitors about the brick slips. Another thing I never thought of when transforming your home, and they really won’t break the bank. They are a beautiful feature to any room, we plan on adding some more to the kitchen and hall way.
As we are currently in mid transformation of the living room we still do have things to add and walls to paint. Hopefully we can get them done in the next few weeks and move onto the dining room. I’d love to use the space under the stairs for all of Oscars toys and bouncers as they take up the majority of the living room at the minute.
Curtains & Cushions
I’d like to get matching curtains and cushions and I’ve never had matching ones before, I’ve been looking at a few different ideas online. I really like the geo mustard and grey styled cushions. As we can’t afford to get a new sofa just yet I like the idea of buying a throw in a grey colour and just sticking that over the sofa until we can get a new one.
Hopefully I can start posting pictures of our new transformed living room in the next few weeks, keep an eye on out my social media pages. Don’t forget to take a peek at my other posts, thanks for reading.
