So, 6 whole months have gone by, the quickest, at times testing but best 6 months of my life nurturing and watching Oscar grow. From the first moment I held him in my arms up until now he surprises me every single day learning new things and growing into that huge personality of his. Here are a few of his first major milestones.
Oscar will be 7 months old on the 8th September and his latest milestone is that he can now sit up and bare his own weight and balance, it started to worry me slightly when I saw other babies around me had already started doing this and my little boy just couldn’t get his balance whilst sitting down but I kept telling myself every baby is different. Thankfully he has now managed to gain control with sitting up and we tried a few things which we think may have helped. He loves to now just sit there and play with his toys or enjoy a snack, trying to lie him down now is a nightmare as he just wants to sit up and have a look around him.
We bought Oscar a ball pit and balls to play in but as he couldn’t sit he just lay in it and he would get bored after a while so we decided to put his feeding seat inside and sit him in, at least then he could look around him and this would try and encourage him to sit up. He loved sitting in his seat in his ball pit and he would play in there with his toys for ages. The seat would help him with his sitting position and help find his balance whilst strengthening his muscles. We also use this seat in the bath as he’s completely out grown his baby baby and his baby bath support and is still a little young to be sitting in the bath with no support I feel, so using this has been brilliant with bath time.
FIRST TOOTH!! Oscar now has his first little pearly white creeping through, he’s had symptoms of teething since he was about 3 months old and we now finally have his very first tooth cutting through. Although I know its only his first and this is still an ongoing journey, but with the calpol at the ready and the cuddles in place were ready for number two. We’ve used a huge variety of teethers for a while now to try and help him with the pain and uncomfortableness. We really like Cheewbies by Nuby, they are easy to sterilise and can be kept in a sterile tub in the fridge to keep nice and cool to soothe babies gums. He’s got the hang of holding them now which makes it a lot easier for him, they are designed for an easy hold and grip and have silicone patterns to help soothe and massage the gums.
Although its only his very first tiny little bit of tooth coming through we are trying to get into the habit of brushing them every morning and every night. We’re trying to get Oscar into the routine of us brushing his teeth morning and night time. (although we do try, sometimes you don’t always manage to do it twice a day but as long as they are having their one brush a day). We bought his first ever toothbrush, it has a big handle for easy grip for you or little one, and it has short neck on the toothbrush to prevent it from going to far into your little ones mouth. This kind of toothbrush is recommended up to 2 years then move onto the next stage brush. We’ve also been using first smiles toothpaste, this is also only recommended up to 2 years due to the low levels of fluoride and at that stage they will have a lot more teeth so a more suited toothpaste to that age would be better.
Oscar really does enjoy his food, don’t we all and at 3 and a half months old he was introduced to new foods. His very first taste of real foods, I have an entire post on weaning and Oscar’s journey so please click here if you would like to read more. (Be prepared for the majority or baby clothes to be covered and stained in orange, why is all baby food orange?) But for now he’s a quick pic of him enjoying his first ever Tomato Wheel.
How proud do you feel as you sit there and watch your baby roll over for the first time, unfortunately I missed this. One morning I lay Oscar down on his back on his playmat surrounded by his favourite teddies and toys and quickly popped upstairs to the toilet, I knew at this stage he’d started the roll but he hadn’t rolled all the way over. His head was facing the tv in my living room and his feet were facing the door, as I came back downstairs Oscar was now on his front with his head facing the door and feet facing the tv. How he’d managed to do this I have absolutely no idea, he’d managed to roll over and completely change direction. Im guessing he’d wiggled his way around, I felt mortified that I had missed his first ever proper roll, but since then I have seen him roll numerous times and my heart melts every single time. I also have what feels like hundreds of videos where I’ve tried to catch him roll, half of them being the successful ones.
Before we went on our First Holiday abroad I decided to start taking Oscar swimming to a local swimming baths to try and get him used to the water, they offer baby suitable swimming slots which are aimed for babies and small children. Luckily Oscar seems to be a water baby anyway and absolutely loves bath time so I was hoping his swimming experience would be just as fun. And right I was, for once.
I put him in his swimming nappy and water suit and off we went, into the baby pool which was lovely and lukewarm. I slowly introduced him to the water and after a while he started moving his arms and legs around and that beautiful beaming smile came out. Unfortunately the fun ended when we got out and started to dry off and get changed, this was the experience Oscar didn’t enjoy, he hates getting changed. I took Oscar swimming for the first time when he was around 3 months old, they do say you can take them earlier but it really is parents preference. When on holiday we took Oscar for little dips in the pool in his little shaded baby float, we’d spend about 10 minutes in the pool on holiday with him as we didn’t want to keep him in too long. It’s also a good way to keep you and baby nice and cool whilst on holiday and its so lovely to see them in the water having a nosey round with new experiences.
Within the first 6 months Oscar has also been on his first abroad holiday, first camping trip and caravan holiday. Have peek and check out some essentials, things to pack and some great tips and advice on taking your baby on holidays. As Oscar is now nearly 7 months old he is already showing signs on new things to come, he’s been baring his own weight for months but he’s now starting to lift his feet when stood up.
I know people say enjoy your time whilst they are still little which I am doing but I am so excited for the future and seeing him grow and develop new milestones. This is our journey and our experience and I am loving watching him grow and develop, if theres one piece of advice I can pass on that has really helped me it would be to take as many photos and videos, I still cannot believe looking back on photos how much he has grown and learnt new things, babies are amazing little humans and I feel so blessed to have my own little human to nurture and watch grow.
